Creating Rosin Carts

Updated: Jul 31

Making your own cannabis vape cartridges from rosin is an ideal alternative to the basic dabbing experience and gives you the added convenience of quickly enjoying your tasty rosin discreetly. Rosin, in its normal form, is not ideal for use in a vape cartridge. The cannabis extract within a vape pen cartridge should be a runny consistency, allowing for consistent and thorough exposure to the heat source. Furthermore, the liquid within a vape cartridge needs to be homogeneous, free of any suspended solids or inconsistent textures throughout. Equipment:

  • High-quality hash rosin

  • Oven

  • Glass syringe with metal needle

  • Vape cartridges (With Ceramic coil)

  • Heat-resistant holding tray to keep cartridges upright

  • Sealable glass jar (total volume of the jar should be at least double the starting volume of rosin)

Method:

Step 1: Fill your jar with rosin or Hash Rosin. Hash rosin will give a much better end product than flower rosin. Never fill the jar more than the halfway mark of the jar as this will prevent any overflowing of the oil.

Step 2: Heat cure or Winterize

Heat Cure: Preheat the oven to 60-75 degrees Celsius. Once your oven has reached the desired temperature, place the sealed jar in the oven for 24-48 hours. Leave the lid completely sealed for the duration.

Remember to never open the lid until you are done as this will release all those good terpenes! When observing the curing process, you will see bubbles form and rise to the top. In the beginning, there will be quite a good bit of bubbles, and the rosin may even muffin up a bit. A good indicator that your cure has reached a desirable consistency for rosin vape is when there are minimal bubbles sitting at the top and no longer seem to be forming. Never open the jar while it is hot! This will release volatile terpenes that you just worked so hard to retain.

Winterizing Rosin: Winterizing rosin is the process of removing fats, lipids, and waxes from the rosin using food-grade alcohol. Although this is not solventless like the rest of the rosin press, the alcohol will be fully evaporated at the end, and none will be left in the final product. By removing all the fats, lipids, and waxes, the rosin will have a lower viscosity and flow more like water, which is perfect for rosin vape carts. First, place the rosin in a glass jar, then add in Food-grade Ethanol or other food-grade alcohol in about a 1:10 ratio (rosin: FG Ethanol), or just enough to fully dissolve the rosin. Mix it with a dab tool to speed along the process.

Next, place the solution into the freezer for about 12-48 hours, or until it has frozen. You will notice the lipids, fats, and waxes have separated and settled away from the rosin. You can remove the fats, lipids, and waxes using coffee filters or another type of fine filter. Finally, the Ethanol or other food-grade alcohol needs to be evaporated from the rosin. The correct way to do this is to purge the ethanol. As this is not always possible, the ethanol will evaporate if you leave the rosin to sit at room temperature, but this will not be enough. You can help it along by placing the rosin in a glass jar without the lid, onto a heat source like a heating pad. Do not exceed anything above 75°C. When it is complete, the rosin should be free of Ethanol and flow similar to water. *Make 100% sure all the Ethanol is evaporated before moving to the next steps!!

Step 3: Check your Viscosity. We now need to make sure the Viscosity is correct. We are aiming for a very low Viscosity.
