Ocimene is one of the more common terpene isolates that make up the scent and flavor profiles of a variety of cannabis strains. It is a monoterpene found in a variety of plants, spices, flowers, and fruits that offer a sweet, woodsy scent. The name “Ocimene” comes from the greek word Ocimum, which means basil, though ocimene doesn’t offer a predominantly herbal flavor.

Ocimene’s flavor is more similar to borneol terpenes, as it tends to be citrusy, fruity, floral, and woody. Some people may experience a metallic taste with Ocimene, though.

What is Ocimene Terpene isolate?

Ocimene, or beta-ocimene, is a monoterpene found in fruits and plants, including cannabis. Ocimene has been the subject of a variety of research as scientists try to understand its effects in the body, but more research needs to be done before we can definitively answer that question. For now, ocimene is typically harvested for its scent and used in perfumes, antiperspirants and even insecticides.

What Does Ocimene Smell & taste like?

Ocimene earned its name from the greek word Ocimum, which means basil, but that doesn’t mean that it tastes or smells anything like that herb. Rather, ocimene’s most predominant aromas are woody, floral and citrus, giving it a complex scent profile that is preferred by manufacturers of a variety of products. For instance, if you love an outdoorsy scent in your cleaning supplies, there’s a good chance you have ocimene to thank for it.

The flavor of ocimene is a lot less complex than its scent—ocimene tastes like fruit, including citrus and pineapple. To show how varied its flavor can be, just look at the plants and fruits it’s in: kumquat, mango, mint, and lavender.

What are the Effects of Ocimene?

Antiviral Qualities

Ocimene has been shown to inhibit several viruses. Some studies even suggest it binds better to viral cells than most other terpenes found in essential oils. The binding affinity of this terpene to certain kinds of viral particles is comparable with camphene and carvacrol.

Ocimene has been shown to neutralize various spike proteins that can cause viral infections to enter human cells. There have also been studies that suggest this terpene is effective in neutralizing the herpes simplex virus or HSV-1.

Antifungal Qualities

Studies have shown that ocimene may have antifungal properties.

A 2018 report states that higher concentrations of ocimene show greater results in inhibiting the growth of fungal infections.
